A young Lakota couple were were very excited when she became pregnant with their first child. When the time came f or the baby to be born, she told her husband, "Hurry. Go tell my mother that the baby is about to be born, and she must come quickly."
He rushed out of the house and drove to his mother-in-law's home. Running into the kitchen, he was about to tell her the news when he realized that he was not supposed to speak directly to her and there was no one else there. He knew he had to hurry. He looked around and saw the cat sitting on a chair.
Facing the cat, he said, "Cat, please tell my mother-in-law that her daughter is about to have the baby."
His mother-in-law turned to the cat and replied, "Cat, please tell my son-in-law that I am ready to go help my daughter with her first child."
And the two of them hurried out to the car.
